Takayama

Takayama is a beautiful city, located high in the Hida mountains (hence why it’s sometimes called Hida-Takayama). After the hustle and bustle of modern Tokyo, Takayama is a welcome reprieve. A merchant city famed for its timber and carpenters, the city thrived under the direct control of the Shogun during the feudal period of Japan’s history.

A stay in Takayama usually involves staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan or inn, bathing in luxurious hot springs, and indulging in a little of the local specialities; like Hida beef. You can also explore the city’s Old Town, a collection of Edo period streets and building that have been perfectly preserved. These streets are home to a number of shops, coffee shops and sake breweries, some of which have been in business for hundreds of years!
