Just a short hop away from Hiroshima city by train and ferry, Miyajima Island is a world away from the hustle and modernity of Hiroshima city. Said to be one of the most beautiful sights in Japan, the red torii gate of Itsushima shrine has come to symbolise Miyajima Island. But there is more to this romantic island than this famous shrine.
After exploring the grounds of Itsukushima Shrine, why not spend some time hiking Mt Misen and admiring the amazing views of Hiroshima bay. If you are there in autumn, make sure to stop by Momiji-dani Park, home to many maple trees which turn the most spectacular colours in this season. Like Nara, Miyajima is home to wild, but friendly deer who naturally live on the island and freely roam its streets.
