Kyoto

Kyoto is Japan’s old capital, and the beating heart of traditional Japanese culture. There is no shortage of things to see and do in Kyoto, which has over sixteen hundred Buddhist temples and four hundred shrines. Among this huge number of historical and religious sites are sixteen UNESCO World Heritage sites. Kyoto is the perfect place to try a number of different cultural activities, like an authentic tea ceremony at a traditional machiya (tea house), or dressing up as a geisha or samurai.

Kyoto is the home to a number of Japanese traditions, including macha (powdered green tea), geisha and kaiseki (a multi-course smorgasbord of delicacies made from the freshest, seasonal ingredients). A trip to Japan would be incomplete without some time in Kyoto and the historic Gion area, where you’ll be able to enjoy a well preserved portion of ancient Kyoto, and hopefully spot a geisha.
