Sake is Japanese wine, made from rice. Even though it’s called wine, the brewing process of sake is closer to that of beer. Usually made from a small number of ingredients (rice, koji and water), it can be served at room temperature, cold, or warm, depending on the quality of the sake and the season.
If you are fond of, or just curious about, Japanese rice wine, a trip to a sake brewery is a treat. Watch how the sake is made and enjoy the highlight at the end – the tasting! Sake breweries are found all over Japan, but Niigata and Takayama are renowned for their high quality as a result of their clear, quality water.
