Naoshima Island

Naoshima Island is two hours by train and ferry from Takamatsu city in Kagawa prefecture (Shikoku Island). Naoshima Island is renowned for its collection of modern art museums, installations, architecture and sculpture exhibits. A trip to Naoshima will undoubtedly appeal to those who enjoy modern art and alternative design. The wonderful aesthetic of the island was created from a desire to produce a new kind of space and experience by juxtaposing contemporary art and architecture with the beautiful backdrop of Naoshima’s natural ecology.

There are a number of must-visit sights for any visitor to Naoshima. Overlooking the southern coast of Naoshima, the Chichu Art Museum is a unique museum; it is located mostly underground and only uses natural light for highlighting the artwork. Also on the southern coast, Benesse House is both a resort hotel and a modern art museum. Home to works by artists from both Japan and overseas, the museum is located on a hill, providing stunning views of the sea. One of the most recent additions to the island’s museum collection is the Lee Ufan Museum, dedicated to the Korean contemporary artist of the same name. Also, if you’re a James Bond fan, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the oddly esoteric 007 Museum.
